Sully Watch: 2008

UPDATE 1:30PM 2008-09-09 He's back. It's still all fishy. My response to his post about his whereabouts can be found by clicking here

So just where is Andrew Sullivan? Last night, at 8:25, Andrew Sullivan posted something that, on its face, seems straight-forward and clear. The post simply applauds Sarah Palin's decision to raise Trig despite the fact that the Palin's knew of his Down Symdrome during the pregnancy. Take a look:

In thinking about this astonishing week, and what's to come, I want to go on record again as saying that the decision to bring up a child with Down Syndrome is one of the most noble, beautiful and admirable decisions any person can make. That Sarah Palin is doing that says a huge amount in favor of her. The love obviously being shown toward tiny Trig is also about as profound an advertisement for genuine, pro-life Christianity as you can have. It means that, in this respect, Palin has walked the walk of the pro-life movement - in ways that many others have not. In my view, and I mean this as passionately as I mean my criticisms of her public record, this really is God's work.
I have no reason to doubt that Sullivan feels this way. It is consistent with his beliefs about abortion. However read it again.

Now keep in mind that Sully is despised by both the left and right of the political spectrum. In many ways his positions are the loneliest to take because they are not often aligned along party lines or ideologies. I respect Sully for this approach (hence my regular citations of his blog on this blog). Now, once again, read what he wrote.

Did you catch any of it? What seemed perfectly clear at first glance becomes quite cryptic upon further observation. It seems to be foreshadowing something, telling his readers that something is about to break and when it does and chaos ensues, he wants people to know where he stands in regards to the innocent child, Trig, and the woman who is raising him as her own.

Let's pick the statement apart piece by piece. My commentary is in red:

In thinking about this astonishing week, and what's to come (what is to come? What information does Sully have that we do not? And why is he withholding it? Is he getting his ducks in a row on a potentially devastating story?), I want to go on record again as saying that the decision to bring up a child with Down Syndrome is one of the most noble, beautiful and admirable decisions any person can make (the "decision to bring up" Did you catch it? Bring up. Not "give birth to a child") . That Sarah Palin is doing that says a huge amount in favor of her. The love obviously being shown toward tiny Trig (not "her son". That's odd. Just the "love that is being shown toward Tiny Trig) is also about as profound an advertisement for genuine, pro-life Christianity as you can have. It means that, in this respect, Palin has walked the walk of the pro-life movement - in ways that many others have not. In my view, and I mean this as passionately as I mean my criticisms of her public record, this really is God's work. (Sully never once calls Trig Sarah's son)
Sully is not some unhinged blogger. He is someone that has built a respectable career on nuance and self-reflection. But reading his posts over the past week, one can't help but wonder if Sully has knowledge of something for which he is catiously seeking proof. If the information he has is not concerning the legitimacy of Sarah's relationship to Trig, I have no doubt it is something equally explosive. The question is, will he collect sufficent evidence to reveal the information, or will he, for the sake of his own reputation, be forced to keep the information to himself?
So, once again, where's Andrew Sullivan?

I was just looking around to see if anyone else had commented on Sullivan's disappearance. Your post is fascinating. I had the same reaction when I read it last night. It could be nothing, but I'd wondered if he knew something more about this baby and, further, today I'd wondered if he is working on something really big.

Again, this is so speculative, but it is interesting that you had the exact same reaction I had.

And, I certainly hoping nothing else might be wrong.

and he begins a subsequent post:

Whatever is to come in the Palin story,

I found it odd that Andrew, out of nowhere, started ranting about Joe Biden's medical records the other day. Seemed to me that he was trying to justify having demanded that Sarah Palin release the records of Trig's birth a few days prior. Maybe he's setting us up for something big. My only caveat is that I have been reading Andrew for probably five years now, and off the top of my head I can't remember a single big piece of news that he himself has "broken". Am I wrong on this?

I too was wondering the same thing. Interesting speculation - you may be right. For the past week- Palin has dominated his blog-and he has pounced harder on the idea of her not being Trig's mom - or the court docs from her husbands ex partners divorce trial-than any other blogger out there. So it wouldnt surprise me if someone had come to Andrew over anyone else and provided him with something damning.
On top of that - Andrew is the most prolific political blogger I know of- he pumps ou posts - every 15 minutes or so. For him to have nothing and not have an alternate is might suspicious. Especially give the odd final post from Sunday.

I just emailed Marc Ambinder (Not really expecting to get a reply, but asking him to post something as to Sullivan's whereabouts, and he replied "he's taking a day or two off". ?????

He hasn't ever done that since I've been reading without letting readers know ahead of time and having subs fill in for him. This is highly irregular. Hmmmm....

This could be a personal crisis for him, (Aaron leaving?) or could be he's in Alaska or writing a major breakout piece about Palin. He was VERY courageous to be the first major blogger to put the Palin baby story on his site. It was a signal that the story was big enough on the blogisphere to go MSM. Two days later the Bristol story came out.
I still think Trig is not Sarah's and I think he looks older than 4 months. Bristol might not be "About 5 months" pregnant. Andrew understands the minute details that sense demands. That's why he's always careful to explain where he's blogging from, when he's going to be off, who's taking his place. I've read him daily since before 9/11. I've been irritated by his diehard Catholicism and his, by now threadbare, conservative postings. But I can't do without him and this is seriously uncharacteristic. Could the Atlantic be putting him under pressure for the Palin posting? Unlikely.
Let's hope Andrew has a new big story and by the way, let's hope he's well.

This is definitely out of character with Andrew to disappear in this fashion.

Hmm, besides a mental health break, he's also posted this:

Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen (What we cannot speak of we must pass over in silence).

Maybe some of the other posters here are on to something about a story??
